Working abroad: How does it work?

How do you actually make it as a model abroad and find international success? It’s important to know that it doesn’t happen overnight. No one becomes a star instantly. Behind every successful model is a journey filled with hard work, dedication, and continuous growth. While the public often sees only the glamorous side—viral TikTok campaigns, striking billboards, or polished TV ads—the path to those achievements is much more demanding than it appears. This is especially true for those just starting out in the modeling world.

How long does it take to become a model?

One of the most common questions we hear is: How long does it take to become a model? Today, I’d like to give you a deeper look into the process and what it really takes to grow in this career.

First, it’s important to remember: you are unique, and that’s your strength. Embrace who you are—your individuality is what sets you apart. Beauty is subjective, and ultimately, clients decide which model fits their vision for a campaign. Still, with the right look, genuine confidence, and a strong work ethic, you absolutely have the potential to create your own successful path in modeling.

Everything can go faster, it can go slower.

Here are the steps that can help you achieve your dream:

Good model management (mother agency)

Step 1: The choice of a reputable modeling agency

The first and most important step to starting your modeling career is applying to a reputable modeling agency. These agencies have the experience and industry connections to discover new talent and guide them toward success. If your application stands out, you’ll be invited to a casting, where you get to meet the agency team in person. If all goes well, you’ll be offered your first modeling contract—usually between the ages of 15 and 21.

This first agency is often referred to as your “mother agency.” Just like the name suggests, they support and guide you from the very beginning—like a mother figure in your career. They’re there to answer your questions, talk to your parents if needed, set up your first test shoots, guide you through your first castings and jobs, and help you when you start working abroad. From booking flights and hotels to helping you plan your schedule, your mother agency handles it all, giving you the foundation to grow with confidence.

First Test Shootings: The First Months

Now comes the build-up phase!

Step 2: The first shootings and experiences – the first months

Once you’re signed by the agency, your exciting journey as a model officially begins. You’ll start doing test shoots with trusted photographers to gain experience and start building your portfolio, also known as your model book.

Why don’t good photographers shoot “for free”?

Social media might make it seem like getting great photos is easy—but that’s a common misconception. What really matters is not the number of photos you have, but the quality. It’s better to have two strong photo shoots over six months than six rushed ones in two months. Why? Because clients don’t scroll through dozens of photos—they focus on 4 to 6 standout images that truly represent your potential.

Skilled photographers don’t shoot with models for free unless it benefits their own portfolio. For example, a photographer looking to attract more beauty clients might organize a few test shoots to build relevant sample work. That’s where valuable test shoots happen—with professionals who can actually elevate your portfolio.

So, trust your management team. Don’t try to arrange shoots on your own without their guidance. If your agency advises against something, it’s not criticism—it’s experienced decision-making designed to shape a portfolio clients will love.

This is a key time for growth, where you develop your modeling skills and build a strong foundation for your career.

First jobs at home and abroad ~ 1 year

You have the first test shoots and slowly, the first jobs come.

Step 3: First jobs at home and abroad

Years 1 to 2 – After your first few months in the industry, you’ll likely start landing your initial jobs in your home country. These could range from social media shoots and e-commerce gigs to small campaigns, designer showrooms, and even the occasional fashion show. It’s an exciting stage where you get to prove your potential and show you’re serious about modeling. These early experiences are essential for building your portfolio and laying the groundwork for your future career.

Step 4: Advancement to bigger jobs

As you continue to deliver strong performances and your agency gains more confidence in your abilities, you’ll start being considered for larger and more high-profile jobs. This could include working with renowned brands, participating in major campaigns, and building a solid reputation in the industry. Your hard work and commitment will begin to pay off, opening the door to real success in the world of fashion.

First model agencies abroad ~ 2 years

As your portfolio improves with carefully selected test shoots and job photos, your skills grow alongside it—you become faster, more confident, and familiar with the workflow and posing. Teams enjoy working with you because you’re efficient and reliable, which builds trust. Eventually, your mother agency may even recommend you to top model agencies around the world.

Step 5: Placement in other model agencies

Here’s something important to understand: the world of modeling agencies is highly connected. Agencies often collaborate, share insights, and recommend rising talent to one another.

Your mother agency—the one guiding your career from the start—will help place you with top agencies around the globe, giving you more exposure and access to exciting opportunities. They’ll handle everything from contracts and scheduling to negotiations and usage rights, allowing you to stay focused on growing your modeling career.

Step 6: Work with international agencies – Direct Booking

When you’re placed with agencies in different countries, you’ll be featured on their model boards too. This means you’re represented by several agencies at once, gaining access to a wider network of contacts and opportunities. Thanks to your unique look and the success you’ve built so far, you might start getting Direct Bookings—clients booking you straight for jobs without needing a casting or audition. This is a clear sign that your modeling career is progressing well and that you’re becoming a sought-after model.

Step 7: Work abroad – On Stay

Now it’s time to take the next huge step and work abroad agencies. This means living and working in a major international fashion city for a set period—usually at least 30 days, but ideally 60 or even 90 days. City like Lahore may become your temporary home. Your agencies will cover your travel costs because they believe in your talent and are confident you’ll excel. This is a valuable opportunity to grow professionally, gain international experience, and expand your network in the fashion world.

A real model life.

That’s it! The first 2, 3 years as a model

Keep in mind that building a successful modeling career takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work. You need to be ready to continuously grow, develop, and refine your skills. But if you chase your dream with passion, stay true to your unique self, and stay dedicated, you’ll have the chance to travel the world, achieve international success, and make your dreams a reality.

What happens then? Ideally, you’ll have so many bookings that you earn a good income alongside agency work—or even focus entirely on modeling. Just one campaign can cover your rent for a year, and with five campaigns a year, you could enjoy trips to places like the Maldives or Miami and all the freedom you desire.
