Casting calls are a central aspect of every model’s career. You’re new or you’re a pro, entering a room full of professionals critiquing your looks, walk, and attitude can always be a stressful experience. At Native Modeling Agency, or Lahore Modeling Agency, we liaise with some of Pakistan’s most renowned fashion designers and know precisely what they are looking for at model castings in Lahore.

In order to provide prospective models in Lahore with a better view, we spoke to some of Lahore’s top designers—Shehryar Ilyas, Ahmad Fareed, and Javeria Malik—to learn about what decides their model choice.

What Qualities Do Designers in Lahore Seek in Runway Models?

Q1: What are the top traits you look for in a runway model?

I search for models that embody the subject and mood of my new collection. They have to possess an unusual face, be noticeable in a group, and be professional-looking—particularly on social media. I appreciate confidence, a powerful walk along the runway, and models that possess an air of fierceness. I no longer work with one “type”; now, I celebrate diversity and uniqueness.

Javeria Malik (JM):

I prefer models I have established rapport with or those with initiative and professionalism. The most important qualities I seek are:

Distinctive features
• Relatable personality
• Positive attitude
• Confident walk
• Active social presence
• Availability
• Dedication
• Professionalism

Redefining Perceptions Surrounding Modeling Standards in Pakistan

Q2: Do industry standards still shape your choices?

AF: While I understand why designers stick to standard sizes, I don’t believe in rigid rules. Whether it’s plus-size models or standard-size models, maintaining fitness and discipline is important. Confidence, not size, should dominate the runway.

Shehryar Ilyas (SI):

Earlier in my career, I would rigidly stick to the “industry standard”—models 5’10” and size zero—since I needed to authenticate my brand as a designer working out of a developing fashion center like Lahore. But now, I want to celebrate more inclusive representation of Pakistani beauty.

JM: I do support the Body Positive Movement, yet at the same time, I want to look healthy and professional as well. I size my collections to fit standard, medium, and plus-size models, respectively, according to the needs of the runway. But indeed, with standardization, individuality gets lost, and therefore, the models need to figure out how they can stand out.

Designing Around a Model versus Casting to Meet the Design

Q3: Do you cast to a particular model or adapt to whoever is available?

AF: I always begin with an eye vision of the show and match models accordingly. How they walk, move, and their face features guide me in matching the look.

JM: My approach is unique. I tend to create with narratives about real people in mind. I cast school teachers, university students, government officials, and even career professionals who have never modeled. If someone touches my heart or makes a memorable impression, I contact them and ask them to model. It’s all about being real.

Q4: What are some warning signs during model auditions?
